Authentic(Concrete) Motivation Speaks Louder Than Words
Teacher is the one who stands to bring his students future. Beside teaching, there is one point which is very important from a teacher. Some people say that teacher as a model for the students. Giving motivation can be in several ways, such through speech, tell a inspirational story, showing himself as an evidence, and many more. Especially for authentic method in giving motivation is the most effective way based on my experiences. Sometime, they are as student try to understanding and do such motivations which are given by our teacher, but we've got difficult. That's caused by the evidences within us are don't prove anything. Some cases, student were watching our actions are not proving our speech(motivation). Those circumstances successfully put our students into doubt, furthermore they will not only be motivated by us, precisely they could increase their disbelieving in us, even worse furthermore they don't respect us.
They way of delivering motivation to the students is a good intention. But sometimes we get some results which are unexpected. But then, let's increase our ability in understanding what our students wants, know their need, and just give our virtue. Then they will entrust their problems to us. This is the main point. It's a green sign for us to approach them and deliver motivation, surely it would be accepted well. Through some complicated situations, we will learn. Simply, giving the concrete examples or authentic examples is something brilliant. For instance, we want our student to sing in the class but during the moment we aren't joining their activity and precisely have busy time to do something else. It will cause decrease their spirit and motivation to do. The other examples, we want our student to read a book everyday but we don't do that, at least show in every chance that we bring a book. Those scene will grow their mindset that "O, my teacher read the book everyday,.....", "I could do that too". Then the final result we would see most of them are glad to read a book. That's the power of concrete examples. Once, as Imam Ghazali said that Akhlaq (good habit) can not be delivered by only speaking but actions. As a moslem I want to write a couple verses of Surah As-Shaff:
“O you who believe! Why say ye that which you do not?, It is most hateful in the sight of Allah that ye say that which you do not.” (QS. As-Shaff: 2-3)
Thank for read my post. Hopefully, this post will remind us about skill improvement as a teacher, especially for myself. I'd like to say thanks to Mr. Fay who has given me some motivation through authentic manner. Let's improve our skill and always learn.
